Mervin Steenkamp made it a memorable end of March when he won the Palestine Marathon for a second consecutive year. Mervin won the race in a time of 2h49m.
The Itheko stalwart participated in the race to raise funds for the Dr Musa and Suhaila Nasir Gaza Pediatrtic Cancer Department, the first of its kind in Gaza.
In 2016, Mervin – who originally hails from Paarl but now lives in Athlone – finished the race in a time of 2h35m, which was a new personal best time for him.
Mervin, who is a father of three, was recruited to run for Itheko in 2010 by the club’s Elite Coach, Pine Pienaar. He was crowned as the club’s Elite Athlete of the Year in 2011 on the back of some impressive performances. Mervin then struggled to shake off some some persistent injuries over the next few years but during the second half of 2015, he started to regain the form that made him one of the club’s best runners.
